Brake Pads

Your brake pads are a key component of your braking system and they are a part that you should never be overlooked. Brake pads compress to create friction on your brake rotors which causes your vehicle to stop. This means your brake pads are working really hard, all the time..
The force needed to stop a moving vehicle is massive and produces a lot of heat which slowly degrades the brake pads.

Worn brake pads means less effective braking which is hazardous to you and others on the road. And so regualr check-ups and testing of your brake pad's condition is important.

How do I know when it's time for a Brake Pad Replacement?

If your brakes squeal - that can be an indication that your brake pads are wearing down; many pads have a small metal piece embedded in them which scrapes on the disc when your brake pads are wearing down, causing that high pitch noise. However, you should never wait until you hear noises to get your pads assessed, we recommend having your brakes inspected at every service.

It is important to remember that brake noises are not always caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.

At Service Plus Auto Care we offer a free 65 Point Safety Check with every car service. As part of our Safety Check we inspect the brake pads for wear and inform you if they call for replacing. We can also advise the right pad for your local conditions and driving style.

How regularly should my brake pads be replaced?

Brake Pads can live anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This is dependant on a number of elements such as; driving conditions and style, regular heavy loads. If your brake pads are wearing out too often your mechanic might advise using a heavier duty or heat resistant brake pad more suited to your vehicle.
